Nearshore Opportunities

False Albacore - September thru November, Short Window in April
False Albacore or Albies, are what make the Cape Lookout area famous.  These fish go from 0-40mph in less than three seconds and make for an absolute blast.  Generally, they are fly friendly fish as they travel and hunt in large groups.  This is a very visual fishery as they push bait to the surface and slash through devouring anything that they can.  When hooked into an Albie, you'll be in your backing instantly and holding on for the fight of your life.  These fish can weigh anywhere from 5lbs all the way to over 20#, making for world class fishing.

Atlantic Bonito - April thru May
These fish fight very similar to a False Albacore but make for phenomenal table fare. You can cast a fly at blitzing fish or drop sinking lines down and jig or strip to pull them off the bottom.  This is a much shorter season so while they're here, we make the best of it!

Spanish Mackerel and Bluefish - May thru October
These toothy predators spend their time here during the warmer months and can make for an absolute banger of a day.  As long as a fly is moving, you can typically entice a bite from these carnivorous creatures.  While we enjoy throwing anything from a 5-7wt rod at these fish, we are always prepared with heavier equipment for when the big ones decide to show.

Amberjack - May thru October
These fish are called "Reef Donkeys" for a reason.  They are some of the hardest fighting fish in the sea.  We target these fish over wrecks or reefs up to 100' deep and can entice them to the surface for topwater eats or sink lines deep to get in the thick of things.  Heavier rods like 12wt's and large arbor reels are used to put the breaks to these beasts.

Bull Drum (Adult Redfish) - October thru April
While these giants can be found at other times during the year, we prefer to target them while they are not spawning in the rivers and sounds.  Schools of bull drum generally require a bit more of searching, but when you find them, it's a life changing experience.  We can find them in the bottom of the water column using our sonar or they can be up on the surface busting bait.  When you're searching for dinosaurs, you never really know what you'll run into.
